Africa XL is one of the Club’s favorite programs. We have poured into it the experience and knowledge of Africa that we’ve been building since 2010. This journey has been run regularly since 2016, and since 2022 we have further refined the program so you can enjoy it with maximum comfort and at the right pace.

Southern Africa is one of the few places on Earth where you can embark on an adventurous journey without sacrificing comfort and safety. Thoughtfully developed travel infrastructure here goes hand in hand with high environmental standards, a strong economy, and carefully protected natural and cultural heritage.

In 13 days — a true cascade of impressions: we explore Cape Town, visit the Cape of Good Hope, immerse ourselves in the culture of African winemaking, reach the southernmost point of the continent, observe the behavior of elephants and antelope in Chobe — one of Africa’s finest reserves — and toss a stone into the waters of Victoria Falls, one of the three greatest waterfalls in the world.

Reserve your spot, ask questions!

Want to secure your place as soon as possible? Have a question and no time to search the site for an answer? Or curious to see how our journeys unfold?

From the Journey’s Author

Angelina — known to friends simply as Lina — has been traveling all her life, never standing still. She returns to her native Moscow once a year, if not less. From South Africa to Ethiopia, then to Argentina, on to Brunei, and onward to Australia… In every country, she doesn’t just travel — she lives, sometimes for months, and at times for years.

Lina has long worked with Maverix Travel, and Southern Africa is one of her favorite destinations. She has a deep understanding of wildlife and knows our route perfectly, having traveled it many times. But more than that, Lina will introduce you to the Africa as she has come to know it.

She will share what truly fascinates her — from popular activities and local cuisine to the customs of the people, how they spend their free time, what they care about, and how they live — revealing a world that often remains hidden from visitors.

PROGRAM

The journey’s program is almost too rich for its own good 😉 We’ll visit the magnificent Victoria Falls from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides. We’ll go on safari (this is not hunting!) in two national parks — Chobe in Botswana and Zambezi in Zimbabwe.

We’ll swim in the ocean and explore Cape Town and its nearby towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, home to some of the country’s most refined wine estates.

We’ll reach the Cape of Good Hope, meet penguins, and enjoy an authentic South African braai, while also discovering the city’s vibrant, fashionable side.

All photographs in this section were taken during Maverix Travel Club journeys.

Days One & Two

Victoria Falls · Visit to Zambia · Helicopter Flights · Dinner Cruise on the Zambezi River · Zambezi National Park Safari

We arrive in the town of Victoria Falls.

In both its landscapes and its spirit, Zimbabwe recalls the equatorial regions of the continent. The local people are friendly and relaxed. Time itself seems to fade away here, dissolving into the humid forests and soft red soil.

The famous waterfall lies on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and very close by are two more countries: Botswana and Namibia. Thanks to tourism, the surrounding region has more developed infrastructure than many other parts of the country.

Victoria Falls is shared by two nations. Zimbabwe is home to the broader stretch of the falls, while from the Zambian side you can get closer to the cascade. A gorge separates the two countries, with the Zambezi River flowing at its base and a bridge spanning the chasm.

On the first day, we focus on the falls from the Zimbabwean side and the town of Victoria Falls.

There is no point in trying to describe this wonder of the world — even photos and videos cannot convey the sheer power and inspiration you feel in this extraordinary place. Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world when measured by the combined criteria of height, width, and volume of water. The Zambezi River, one of Africa’s four largest rivers, splits here into countless streams that plunge more than 100 meters into the gorge below. Tons of water rise into the sky as a fine mist, making the falls visible from many kilometers away. As a final gift, nature has wrapped the falls in a magnificent rainforest, where twisted roots and branches weave through a backdrop of thundering water.

The waterfall is far from the only attraction in the region. You can experience thrilling white-water rafting, visit a local village, and admire massive baobab trees. From the bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia, you can take a breathtaking bungee jump, considered one of the most exciting in the world. Those who wish can also take a helicopter or microlight flight to fully appreciate the true scale of this natural wonder.

At times, when the water level drops, it’s even possible to swim in the natural pool known as the Devil’s Pool. This unique spot sits right on the edge of the falls, allowing you to carefully peer into the roaring abyss below.

Upstream from the falls, the Zambezi becomes a wide, calm river. Elephants peer out from the mangroves along the banks, while hippos and crocodiles regularly surface in the water nearby.

On the second day, we explore the falls from the Zambian side, crossing the border into neighboring Zambia for a new perspective on Victoria’s breathtaking views.

Those who wish can take part in their first safari of the journey in Zambezi National Park.

In the evening, we may dine at one of the town’s restaurants or set off on a dinner cruise aboard a spacious boat on the Zambezi River.

Days Three & Four

Botswana · Chobe National Park Safari

Today we cross the border into Botswana and arrive in the town of Kasane, home to one of Africa’s richest wildlife reserves — Chobe National Park.

Chobe is especially famous for its large elephant population, and your chances of seeing them here are exceptionally high. In fact, nearly all of Africa’s iconic wildlife can be found within the park.

The following day, we enjoy two safaris. The first takes place on land, traveling through the park in open safari vehicles. The second unfolds on the water — we cruise along the Chobe River in an open boat, getting close to elephants and hippos along the riverbanks.

Of course, this is not a zoo, but living, breathing wilderness. There are no guarantees that every animal will appear before us — but our chances of encountering a wide variety of savanna wildlife are very high.

We’ll spend the evening in a cozy restaurant, breathing in the scented air of the African savanna, listening to hundreds of birdsong melodies, and enjoying a glass of rich, full-bodied wine.

Days Five & Six

Flight to Cape Town · Transfer to Stellenbosch · The Garden Route · Stellenbosch–Paarl–Franschhoek — South Africa’s Wine Triangle

Today we fly to the Atlantic coast, to the iconic city of Cape Town, and then continue on to the nearby town of Stellenbosch. This small settlement is renowned as the heart of South Africa’s Wine Region. Here, amid the gentle poetry of the Garden Route, surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, we’ll spend two nights.

From this point on, the region reveals a new face. Beaches and cliffs washed by two oceans, generous sunshine, fine wines, and refined cuisine — everything invites you to savor each moment in the relaxed rhythm of what is often called “Africa’s California.”

The Garden Route is a narrow stretch along South Africa’s coastline where the “collaboration” between the oceans and a low mountain range has created a unique microclimate. Unlike the arid, semi-desert landscapes that dominate much of the region, here you’ll find fertile lands that once drew the first European settlers.

We’re in for delightful wine tastings. Stellenbosch, a historic, European-style town, is famous for its university and wineries. Its picturesque center, framed by gentle hills, preserves many old buildings and a nostalgic colonial atmosphere.

We’ll also head to the neighboring town of Franschhoek, where we’ll enjoy a truly unique experience. A whimsical, double-decker wine tram and a matching bus will carry us between estates, while through the vineyards themselves we’ll travel like true South African vintners — riding in a trailer pulled by a tractor.

A bit of history of the Wine Route: winemaking in South Africa began with the first European settlements here in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many of the early colonists were French Huguenots, Protestant refugees who had fled Catholic persecution in Europe. Alongside Dutch Calvinists, they found a welcoming home and quickly turned to what they knew best — making wine. The soil and climate proved even more favorable than in Europe, and before long, South African wines were being served with great distinction at royal courts across the Old World. Winemaking continues to thrive today, with the country’s finest estates concentrated here, around Cape Town.

Each winery takes pride in a particular grape — Pinotage in one place, Merlot in another, and in some estates even the more exotic Malbec, unusual for this part of the world.

Days Seven & Eight

Hermanus & Cape Agulhas

Today we head to the coastal town of Hermanus. In this small, welcoming seaside town, we’ll relax and enjoy local barbecue — a traditional braai.

The following day, we continue to a truly symbolic place — Cape Agulhas.

First, this cape is the southernmost point of the African continent. Beyond it lie only open waters — a journey south from here would ultimately lead to Antarctica.

Second, it is the point where two oceans meet — the Indian and the Atlantic. Of course, this is a convention: the waters blend gradually over a wide, multi-kilometer area rather than along a single line. Still, Cape Agulhas is traditionally recognized as the boundary between the two.

Some also add a third ocean here — the Southern Ocean, whose waters encircle Antarctica.

At the cape, you’ll find a charming pedestal marking the meeting of the oceans, which visitors can easily climb for a memorable photo. Nearby, a recently installed, impressive ground relief — roughly the size of a helicopter landing pad — depicts the entire African continent in remarkable detail.

Days Nine – Twelve

Transfer to Cape Town · City Center · Table Mountain · Cape of Good Hope · Penguins · Botanical Garden · “Twelve Apostles” Beach · Waterfront

Total transfer time:
Stellenbosch → Cape Town — approx. 1 hour
City → Cape of Good Hope — approx. 1 hour
All other transfers combined — approx. 2 hours

In the famous “City on the Cape,” we will spend three nights, staying in a beautiful hotel in a neighborhood reminiscent of San Francisco’s upscale suburbs.

The atmosphere of this historic port capital is infused with a spirit of freedom and exploration. A gentle climate blends with thoughtful, comfortable infrastructure, and the colonial elegance of past centuries meets the breathtaking natural beauty of Africa.

Powerful mountains, wrapped in morning mist, rise between modern high-rises. The wild Atlantic beaches give Cape Town a dramatic grandeur that mirrors its turbulent and heroic history.

Yet Cape Town — often called Africa’s California — doesn’t dwell on the past. This thriving, cosmopolitan city lives fully in the present.

People from nearly every corner of the world have gathered here, much like in the United States — Indians and Dutch, Africans and Polynesians — brought together by South Africa’s unique and complex history.

We’ll take a special cable car to the summit of Table Mountain.

This natural masterpiece is one of the most beautiful places in South Africa and the world. The park is officially listed among the New Wonders of Nature, alongside Iguaçu Falls, Ha Long Bay, the Amazon rainforest, and other extraordinary sites.

From the top, breathtaking views open across the entire city and the surrounding lagoons. Mist flows across the mountain like a vast river in the sky.

Next, we’ll visit the Botanical Garden, a remarkable living museum of South African and regional plant life, beautifully set at the foot of Table Mountain.

We’ll stroll through the city center, explore the colorful houses of the Bo-Kaap district, and walk along the picturesque Waterfront, where elegant yachts and boats line the harbor like an open-air exhibition.

Evenings are for dinners in restaurants overlooking the city, or joining lively local gatherings — the people of Cape Town truly know how to celebrate life.

Those who wish can start one of the days with a helicopter flight — spectacular views and a surge of adrenaline guaranteed.

We’ll drive along the scenic coastal road toward the legendary Cape of Good Hope.

On the way, we’ll stop at a lagoon that has become home to a colony of penguins — yes, penguins! The charming African penguin lives not only near Antarctica, but also along the warm shores of southern Africa. Smaller, quicker, and especially playful, these penguins are friendly and curious, often allowing visitors to come remarkably close.

We’ll also visit the village of Kalk Bay, famous for its beach lined with colorful houses.

After lunch, we continue toward the legendary Cape of Good Hope.

This place has drawn romantics from around the world and struck fear into sailors. Its original name — the Cape of Storms — better reflected its dark reputation. Here, the African continent’s coastline stops stretching south and turns east, soon meeting the waters of another ocean — the Indian Ocean.

The meeting of two oceans makes navigation unpredictable: a storm can rage on one side of the cape while calm waters lie on the other. The most spectacular view of the cape, surrounding cliffs, and beaches opens from nearby Cape Point.

After our full program, you’ll have time to relax on the beaches, explore the city at your own pace, dine out, or shop for souvenirs — in other words, enjoy Cape Town exactly the way you choose.

In the evening, we’ll gather for our farewell dinner — for example, at the famous Twelve Apostles Beach. Named after its Australian counterpart, this beach sets the scene for our final night together. In one of its many restaurants, we’ll enjoy steak, burgers, or seafood, accompanied by excellent wine, with views of the evening shoreline and plans for future journeys.

Day Thirteen

Return

Today we transfer to Cape Town International Airport and depart for home.
